The Gunnar Nielsen Family: 'Pioneers and Progress' Excerpt

May 10th 2025
From “THE GUNNAR NIELSEN FAMILY – By Gundhild Nielsen as told by her parents” excerpted from Pioneers and Progress, the Alix-Clive History Club

In 1958 Anna and Gunnar Nielsen emigrated from Denmark to Canada, landing at Halifax after nine
days, watery days, on a steamship. We then started on our way to Innisfail by train with four sons.
Niels, George, Ole, and Johan and our daughter Gundhild. After four days and four nights, the train
finally dropped us off at our destination where we worked on a turkey farm. Before long we got tired of
that job and stopped in at the Red Deer Employment office to see what they could offer us. They told
us that there was a Bob Stone south of Alix who was looking for help. After talking to Bob and seeing
the farm we made up our mind to leave Innisfail and work for him.

After three good years of working here and learning Canada’s way of farming we felt we were ready to
start up our own farm. So we moved just a little way this time, where we rented Peter Russell’s farm for
a year, and then in 1963 we managed to buy it.

It’s 1973 now and after fifteen years of living in Canada we and the children are still mighty glad we
came.
